FAQs
PSM Call Out is PMA’s permanent platform for defending public service media (PSM) worldwide. It brings together our public statements, reports, briefings, and calls to action in response to growing challenges facing independent media. This campaign is a revitalisation of work that began in 2019 under the “Global Call Out”, now renewed with a sharper focus and a permanent presence under the Public Media Alliance banner.
Advocating for public service media has always been central to PMA’s mission. But as threats to public media intensify — from shrinking budgets and political interference to attacks on editorial independence — we must be louder, more strategic, and more unified in our defence. PSM Call Out amplifies our message, gives it a permanent home, and makes it easier for others to join us. But it’s not just about advocacy; it’s about calling out the threats, demanding accountability, and reasserting the essential role that trusted, independent public media plays in healthy societies and democracies. This campaign brings clarity and urgency to our mission, while offering people meaningful ways to take action.
The platform includes PMA’s official statements, letters to governments and decision-makers, insight articles, policy briefings, consultation submissions, member news, and open calls to action. It also highlights opportunities for engagement, such as events and ways to support the campaign.
Yes. While PMA is not a lobbying organisation, PSM Call Out will include targeted submissions to consultations, public letters, and advocacy reports intended to inform policy decisions and media regulation.
Anyone can support PSM Call Out. Individuals are encouraged to sign open letters, share campaign materials, alert us to developments in their region, recommend topics for policy briefings, amplify the initiative across platforms, and more. Organisations can engage by collaborating, contributing relevant insights and research, or endorsing calls to action.
PSM Call Out has a global remit. Our priority is to highlight where public media are facing urgent threats or significant changes — regardless of the country or region. While some contexts may demand more attention at certain times, the campaign remains responsive to emerging challenges worldwide, ensuring that no issue goes unnoticed wherever public service media are at risk.
