Transatlantic Media Fellowships 2023
Deadline: 1 April 2023
The Transatlantic Media Fellowship program supports well-researched transatlantic journalism. As in previous years, the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Washington, DC, will give a select number of journalists from the United States, Canada, and Germany the opportunity for on-the-ground reporting relevant to the foundation’s work on climate & energy policy, democracy & social policy, technology & digital policy, and foreign & security policy. We accept applications for either travel-based or virtual research and reporting.
This year we will broaden our understanding of the Atlantic and open the Transatlantic Media Fellowship to journalists from Africa and Latin America. The focus will be on Global Development Policy issues related to the Global South and the USA/Germany. For those interested, please see the description in the Issue Areas section.

Story Grants to Report on the Mediterranean Sea
Deadline: 7 April 2023
Today, with the total population of the Mediterranean countries estimated at around 512 million, and set to grow by another 180 million by 2050, the once abundant Mediterranean sea is at the center of an overfishing crisis. Increased fishing capacity has ultimately placed these waters under unsustainable pressure, leading to recent estimates that over 87% of assessed Mediterranean fish stocks are overfished. The decline of the overall health of the Med sea is disrupting the robustness of ecosystems, with an increasing number of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems being put forward for regional protection to try to safeguard some of the legacy of the Med for future generations to enjoy.
With support from the Adessium Foundation, EJN is pleased to offer five story grants with a budget of up to 1,000 Euros each for this second round of story grants to selected journalists to report on overfishing, illegal fishing and the biodiversity crisis in the Mediterranean region. In addition to funding, selected journalists will receive support from experienced mentors through the story production process.

Lyra McKee Bursary Scheme 2023

The Asia Journalism Fellowship
Deadline: 19 April 2023
Temasek Foundation has been bringing Asian journalists together in Singapore through this unique programme since 2009. The programme was hosted first by the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at Nanyang Technological University, and since 2017 by the Institute of Policy Studies at the National University of Singapore. The Covid-19 pandemic forced us to cancel the 2020 programme and in 2021, it was run online only. In 2022, we had a hybrid AJF, with four weeks online and two weeks in Singapore. The 2021 Fellows came too, creating a first for AJF, with two batches present at the same time.
The 2022 programme in Singapore was a mix of visits to newsrooms and media campuses, talks by experts, journalism-related training workshops, and dialogues with senior government officials and media personalities.

European Cross-Border Grants

This awarded grant programme supports since 2009 professional journalists who have good ideas for cross-border investigations and for research on European topics. The stories must be relevant to European target groups.
Cross-border teams of professional journalists can apply for a grant to cover working time and/or expenses for their investigation.
Next to a grant, teams can also apply for a mentor to provide assistance with either the focus of the investigation or the need for competences in a specific skill.

Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship

The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship provides academic and professional opportunities to advance the reporting skills of women and nonbinary journalists who focus on human rights and social justice. The Fellowship was created in memory of The Boston Globe correspondent and IWMF Courage in Journalism Award (1998) winner Elizabeth Neuffer, who died while reporting in Iraq on May 9, 2003. In collaboration with Neuffer’s family and friends, the IWMF started this program to honor Neuffer’s legacy while advancing her work in the fields of human rights and social justice.
The Neuffer Fellowship is designed for women and nonbinary journalists with at least three years of professional experience in journalism working in print, broadcast, or digital media, either as a staff journalist or as a freelancer. All nationalities are welcome to apply but non-native English speakers must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program. The Fellow will complete research and coursework at MIT’s Center for International Studies and journalism internships at The Boston Globe and The New York Times. The flexible structure of the program provides the fellow with opportunities to pursue academic research and hone their reporting skills. Past fellows have taken advantage of opportunities to publish work under their byline through various media outlets.

Investigation Grants for Environmental Journalism

This grant programme supports cross-border teams of professional journalists and/or news outlets to conduct investigations into environmental affairs related to Europe.
Next to investigations of environmental issues that transcend borders, this programme can also support and stimulate comparative investigations into local environmental issues and policies between two or more regions or cities.
The grants can also offer support to preliminary work in the development of new investigative projects.
The grant can cover working time and expenses such as logistics, travel, insurance, access to legal support, translations, access to technology and data sets, etc.

European Commission’s Journalism Partnerships

The Commission continues to support the resilience of the news media sector with a third call for Journalism Partnerships. This year, the scope of the financing has been enlarged with a second action and the budget has been increased to €10 million.
This year’s Journalism Partnerships call for proposals is composed of two actions: a first one to increase collaborations between media by stimulating innovation in business models and in editorial processes, and a second one to support media pluralism and media of particular relevance to democracy and civic participation.

DRL Supporting Free and Independent Media Globally

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL) announces an open competition for organizations interested in submitting applications for a project that will support civil society and independent media to advocate and hold governments accountable by promoting and strengthening the ability of individuals to exercise their fundamental freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly free from harassment, intimidation, and physical harm.
The program should promote and protect open and resilient information ecosystems by 1) promoting the long-term adaptive capacities and sustainability of independent journalists, including free lancers, and media outlets, and 2) bolstering the resilience of journalists and independent media outlets to legal and regulatory challenges. The awarded project will serve as one component of a larger DRL initiative to protect independent journalism globally.

Prague Civic Center offers fellowship program [Eastern Europe, Central Asia]

Journalists, bloggers, activists and others can apply for this program.
The Prague Civil Society Center’s fellowship program is accepting applications.
Participants will stay in Prague, Czech Republic, for three months, where they will visit Czech NGOs and think tanks, participate in project development workshops, share experiences, and work on their own projects.
The eligible countries are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
The Prague Civil Society Center will cover travel expenses, provide accommodation, small daily allowance for living in Prague, and also assist in obtaining a visa. Participants will also have access to a shared office space with access to the internet and a printer.
The fellowship program will run Autumn 2023 and Spring to Summer 2024.

Scott Trust Bursaries available for master’s in journalism [UK]

Aspiring journalists from underrepresented backgrounds can apply for funding to pursue a master’s in journalism.
The Guardian Foundation is offering the Scott Trust Bursaries to assist students who face financial difficulty in attaining the qualifications needed to pursue a career in journalism.
The bursaries pay all course tuition fees and provide a subsistence allowance of GBP6,741 towards living expenses.
In addition, candidates take part in several weeks’ work experience at Guardian News & Media with expenses covered, and are paired with a Guardian mentor.
Candidates are eligible for courses at select universities in the United Kingdom where they can pursue a MA in journalism, data journalism, newspaper journalism or multimedia journalism.

The Digital Connections Program builds on a belief that protecting fundamental freedoms requires networks of likeminded partners, working across borders, to ensure that internet freedom, free expression, and democratic governance is accessible to all people.

Freelance, local journalism contest open [Worldwide]

Print and online journalists worldwide can apply for an award.
The Kurt Schork Memorial Fund, in partnership with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, organises the Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism, honouring the work of freelance journalists and of local reporters and fixers in developing countries or nations in transition who often otherwise receive little recognition.
The awards feature three categories: freelance journalists covering international news, local reporters covering events in their home country or region and news fixers. Each winner receives a US$5,000 prize.
The stories can be about conflict, human rights, cross-border issues or any controversial matter in a particular country or region. Each submission must demonstrate professionalism, meet international journalistic standards and provide evidence that courage and determination were required to cover the story.
All articles must be translated into English and have been published between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023.

Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation offers grants [Worldwide]

French-speaking journalists, documentary filmmakers and photographers can apply.The Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation organises a grant program that supports young media professionals in the development of their projects in France or abroad.
There are three types of grants: the photographer grant: EUR 10,000 (US$10,716) intended for photographers ages 35 and younger; the print journalist grant: EUR 10,000, for reporters under age 30; and the documentary filmmaker grant: EUR15,000 (US$16,074) for documentary filmmakers under age 30.
Applicants do not have to be nationals of a French-speaking country but must be able to present their project in French, both orally and in writing.

The International Press Institute is accepting applications for the New Media Incubator Programme. The New Media Incubator invests in media entrepreneurs developing creative, new business models and products shaping the media market today and tomorrow. This includes startups and new media ventures designing, launching and growing into viable businesses by providing financial support, coaching, network access and training.
It is a six-month programme for Europe-based new media ventures and early-stage publishers building on existing ideas. The programme supports publishers with a minimum viable product launched in their target community at least six months prior.
Publishers will work to identify market gaps, gain a deeper understanding of their audience’s information needs, prototype a product, and continuously experiment, test and maintain their startup or a part of their business or content model. Successful applicants will have an elaborate and strategic approach to their business model but need financial support and mentoring in implementing it.
New Media Incubator may cover any percentage of a project’s costs, up to 100 percent of the total. Co-funding is encouraged but not mandatory. Teams must declare any existing sources of funding on their application.

Awards recognize investigative video and audio projects [Worldwide]

Filmmakers and audio storytellers who have produced investigative works can compete for an award.
The DIG Awards recognize excellence in investigative audio and video reporting. Winners will be chosen at the eighth edition of DIG Festival, which will take place in Modena, Italy September 21 to 24.
As part of this year’s awards, the competition will also include a pitch category. Filmmakers are invited to submit work in the pre-production phase for a chance to win a EUR15,000 to finish their project.
The deadline to enter finished works is June 15. The deadline to submit a pitch for funding is July 15.

IAPA seeks entries for excellence in journalism contest [Americas]

The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has launched the 2023 Excellence in Journalism Award.
The competition is offered in 14 categories: cartoon internet news coverage, news coverage, interview, longform, human rights and community service, photography, infographics, opinion, data journalism, in-depth journalism, environmental journalism, health journalism and university journalism. 2023 Dart Center Ochberg Fellowship

The Dart Center Ochberg Fellowship is a unique seminar program for senior and mid-career journalists who wish to deepen their knowledge of emotional trauma and psychological injury, and improve reporting on violence, conflict and tragedy.
Fellows attend an intensive weeklong program of seminars held at Columbia University in New York City. Program activities include briefings by prominent interdisciplinary experts in the trauma and mental health fields; conversations with journalist colleagues on issues of ethics, craft and practice, and a variety of other opportunities for intellectual engagement and peer learning.
The Ochberg Fellowship covers roundtrip travel, 7 nights of lodging, meals and expenses directly related to participation such as ground transportation and travel insurance. The Fellowship program will be held July 21-27, 2023 at Columbia University in New York City.

CBC New Indigenous Voices is a full-time, 14-week training program for up to 10 Indigenous creators to learn the essential elements of working in the film, TV and digital media industries. The full-time program begins with classroom sessions and group activities led by industry leaders. Topics will cover all aspects of the creative media arts, including story development, directing, producing and more. Participants are required to invest significant time in homework assignments.
Participants will gain hands-on experience by working in a group to produce a short film where they’ll learn the many crew positions required to bring an idea from script to screen.

One World Media Fellowship

One World Media Fellowship is aimed at aspiring journalists and filmmakers who seek to make a career out of reporting on stories from the global south. Working in film, print, audio or multimedia, our Fellows’ projects bring together integrity and creativity to present underreported stories that break down stereotypes and build cross-cultural connections. CUNY Business Journalism Fellows

Journalists with at least five years of experience can apply for a remote fellowship. The McGraw Center for Business Journalism at the City University of New York’s Craig Newmark School of Journalism offers a fellowship program to support in-depth coverage of business and the global economy. The fellowship provides editorial and financial support to journalists who need the time and resources to tackle complex, time-consuming stories. The program is accepting applications for in-depth text, video or audio pieces. Fellows will receive grants up to US$15,000 to complete investigative and enterprise stories. Reporters and editors working at news organizations, as well as freelancers, may apply. International journalists are also eligible as long as their reporting is completed in English and targeted to a U.S. media outlet and audience.

Diversity fellowship

Journalists of colour can apply for this program. The Maynard Institute, in partnership with Fox Corporation, is organizing the Maynard 200 Journalism Fellowship. The program will offer training in four tracks: storytelling, executive leadership, media entrepreneurship and frontline editors and managers. Participants will attend in-person workshops in Forth Worth, Texas, June 26 to 30 and Oct. 23 to 26, followed by yearlong mentorship, supplementary courses and virtual meetings. Hotel accommodations for fellows will be paid for by the Maynard Institute. Fellows will be reimbursed up to US$500 for their airfare and ground transportation. Applicants living outside the United States need to be affiliated with a U.S.- based media outlet or organization.

DW Akademie offers 10 full scholarships for journalists

DW Akademie is accepting applications for its International Media Studies program (IMS) in Bonn, Germany, which will start in September. Students who successfully complete the four-semester program will be awarded a master of arts degree.
The program offers a mix of research, lectures and practical experience and combines these disciplines: media and development, journalism, communications and media management.

The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Business Journalism provides experienced journalists with grants up to $15,000 and the editorial support needed to produce deeply reported enterprise and investigative stories that delve into critical economic, financial or business issues across a wide array of subjects. The ERC Collaborative Reporting Grants
The Environmental Reporting Collective is proud to announce we’re accepting applications for Collaborative Investigation Grants open to media outlets, journalists, and freelancers.
These grants ($1000 to $3000 USD) are specifically aimed at promoting collaboration, and allowing journalists from different countries to work together to fill in gaps in each others’ reporting, especially when tracing environmental crimes across borders.
Funds can be used creatively, and there is no travel requirement.

Beyond survival? A new Human Resources research project for PMA members
Our new project aims to develop people management strategies to ensure the development and growth of PSMs in the fragmented digital media landscape.
In an exciting new research project, the Public Media Alliance (PMA) has partnered with Peter Block from the University of Westminster’s Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI), to launch a project that will review the processes by which participating PSM’s manage the employer-employee relationship during the employment life-cycle.
The purpose is to highlight issues for the sector at large, identify common themes of staff development needs, and offer some practical recommendations for good practice to the PMA community.
BFI Young Audiences Content Fund
The BFI is administering a three-year pilot fund of £57 million, derived from the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), to help expand the children’s content industry in the UK.
The Fund seeks to support public service broadcasting content aimed at audiences under 18 with the creation and development of new programmes which include PSB values by reflecting UK identity and children’s lives (both regionally and nationally), educating and informing audiences as well as representing more diversity and alternative voices.
‘Production and development awards will contribute to the funding of programmes, shown on television and online platforms, that have public service broadcasting values in live-action and animation and across all genres.’

Collaborative Operations and Services Grant Program [US based]
Organised by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), “The Collaborative Operations and Services (“COS”) grant program is intended to support multistation initiatives to fully develop and implement collaborations, strategic alliances and other forms of partnerships that will increase stations’ abilities and capacities to achieve more together than each can accomplish alone.
The COS will provide smaller grants to assist stations with facilitation, analysis, and research (“FAR”) required for establishing parameters for collaboration efforts (see details below), as well as larger grants for the implementation of serious collaborative efforts.”

Course on diversity in the news and newsrooms

This instructor-led course aims to explore how diversity can transform journalism by democratising the profession from within. First Jobs Fund
The Journalists’ Charity recently launched a fund for new journalists starting out in the field. “The fund will offer support with essential costs such as accommodation, moving home, transport and essential work-related equipment.”
Funding available for Black journalists [US based]
The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) and Black Journalists Therapy Relief Fund are providing two emergency funding opportunities. The Black Journalists Therapy Relief Fund is designed to provide financial assistance for Black journalists who are unable to pay for mental health support. The IWMF’s United States Journalism Emergency Fund may address needs related to work, such as medical aid, destroyed or stolen equipment and protective gear; or long-term needs such as trauma, mental health services and referrals to legal support. Applicants must be working journalists and must provide proof of their financial need.

ICFJ Knight Fellowships
The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is looking for outstanding journalists with a background in digital journalism, training or coaching, to work “in key areas of innovation such as newsroom transformation, entrepreneurship and business models, technology creation and adoption, diverse voices in news, investigative reporting, digital security and specialized reporting on health, gender and development.”

The Pulitzer Center’s International Reporting grants support reportage on topics of global importance. IWMF – Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists
The Howard G. Buffet Fund for Women Journalists, established by the International Women’s Media Foundation, provides funding to promote and advance the work of woman-identifying journalists in the news media globally. The fund accepts applications on a rolling basis. Teams of journalists may apply but the submission must be from a woman journalist and her team must include at least 50% women.

Journalists, media managers and other media professionals can take self-directed courses in English, French, Arabic and Russian. The Global Investigative Journalism Network (IGJN) launched a collaborative network during a GIJN webinar. This is a platform where pitches for investigative documentaries and long-form productions about Covid-19 can be submitted and passed onto several public broadcaster production teams including BBC Africa, BBC Arabic, CBC Canada, PBS Frontline and RTS in Switzerland as well as Premières Lignes, an independent French TV production and news agency that has worked with France Télévisions.

Press Freedom Accountability Project grant funding [US based]
Following recent attacks on and intimidation of journalists in the United States, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is partnering with the News Leaders Association (NLA) to provide journalists with grants between $2,000 and $5,000 to “support reporting on press freedom violations and accountability.”
Rainforest Journalism Fund

The Pulitzer Center has a number of grants available under its Rainforest Journalism Fund — the International Rainforest Journalism Fund; the Amazon Rainforest Journalism Fund; the Congo Basin Rainforest Journalism Fund; and the Southeast Asia Rainforest Journalism Fund. The fund represents a major investment in international environmental and climate reporting. Transatlantic Media Fellowship

European media representatives are invited to apply for this fellowship, which will give them the chance to travel across the United States and expand on their knowledge of America and its citizens.
Organized by the Transatlantic Media Network (TMN), the goal of this fellowship is to strengthen the existing transatlantic relationship and improving mutual understanding among journalists and media professionals of both sides of the Atlantic.
The visiting journalists will follow an individual itinerary, created on their skills and interests, which will take them mostly around Washington DC and to visit TMN’s partner institutions, such as universities and journalism schools.
The fellowships may have a different duration but they will all be up to three months.
