PRESS RELEASE
Ireland’s media regulator joins PMA as Affiliate Member
13th February 2025
The Public Media Alliance warmly welcomes Coimisiún na Meán, Ireland’s media regulator, into our alliance of public media organisations, regulators, and supporters.

Ireland’s media regulator, Coimisiún na Meán, has become the latest media regulator to join the Public Media Alliance as an Affiliate.
Coimisiún na Meán was established in 2023, further to the provisions of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022. It is the independent media regulator responsible for regulating broadcasters, video-on-demand providers and online platforms established in Ireland. An Coimisiún is also responsible for supporting and developing the Irish media sector.

As part of its duty to regulate broadcasters, it also has special responsibilities to oversee Ireland’s two public media organisations: RTÉ, the national broadcaster, and TG4, the Irish language broadcaster. Coimisiún na Meán ensures both RTÉ and TG4 are transparent and accountable in their use of public funds, and that they provide the services the Irish public expect of them.
The regulator also proactively undertakes research, to understand what Irish audiences want from the media. Recent research, for example, demonstrated that nine out of ten people living in the Gaeltacht (areas where the Irish language is the dominant language) and two thirds of those living outside the Gaeltacht, wanted to see more Irish language content on TV.
The Public Media Alliance (PMA) is a global association of public service media organisations, regulators, and supporters, with a mission to support and promote the role of public service media. PMA’s membership is split between Members, and Affiliate Members – organisations that are part of the wider public media ecosystem such as independent regulators, academic institutions and fellow civil society organisations.

“Coimisiún na Meán is responsible for developing and regulating a thriving, diverse, creative, safe and trusted media landscape and this includes our public service media organisations, RTÉ and TG4. As part of our commitment to public service media, we are delighted to join the Public Media Alliance, and we look forward to a constructive working partnership with them and their members.”
– Aoife MacEvilly, Broadcasting and Video-on-Demand Commissioner

“I am thrilled to welcome Coimisiún na Meán to our global alliance. Since their creation in 2023, the regulator has demonstrated its commitment to supporting the role of public service media in Ireland, and ensuring it provides the best possible service to Irish audiences. I look forward to working with them closely and learning from them in the years ahead, and I know their membership will be of immense value to our global membership.”
– Kristian Porter, CEO of PMA
