Kenya’s Standard newspaper has unveiled a free newsreader app for android smartphones called Standard Digital News.
The app allows users to read the top news and entertainment pieces from their android devices and access stories and photos as they are uploaded.

Speaking at the app launch, the Standard Group’s Director of Value and Innovation, Francis Munywoki, said the move was strategic and it would provide users with a richer digital experience, the Standard reported.

“As we seek to capture further the online market and advance our lead in digital business we are proud to unveil this new mobile app. The app will provide easy access and improved user experience for consumers who interact with our content through smart digital devices,” said Munywoki.

The media group said the app was designed for efficient and affordable data usage, and news stories would be available offline once downloaded.

The app joins around a dozen existing android applications for news in Kenya, and has had 500-1,000 downloads to date. Another newspaper, Daily Nation, has its own app, with 1,000-5,000 downloads.
