Today, CBC/Radio-Canada released a progress report on the National Indigenous Strategy, Strengthening Relations, Walking Together.
Since the launch of the strategy in February 2024, CBC/Radio-Canada has:
- Partnered with organizers at more than 50 Indigenous-led events from coast to coast to coast and laid a foundation for stronger, deeper relationships;
- Created new opportunities for Indigenous artists and creators to thrive, through programs like the Reverie Music Residency in partnership with SOCAN and Early Stage Scripted Development in partnership with APTN and the Indigenous Screen Office;
- Invited more Indigenous people to work with us through the new Indigenous Talent Community;
- Provided new resources for Indigenous employees, such as the Indigenous Peer Support Circle at CBC News;
- Launched groundbreaking Indigenous programming, including North of North, Sur les traces d’Anachnid, and a dedicated page for Indigenous podcasts, radio shows and audio books on Radio-Canada OHdio; and
- Brought the CBC Massey Lectures to Iqaluit for the first time, which included simultaneous interpretation into Inuktitut.
“This report shows how the relationships between the public broadcaster and First Nations, Inuit and Métis are changing. Together we are creating more authentic, compelling Indigenous content to share with Canada and the world, including programs like North of North and Sur les traces d’Anachnid. Thank you to everyone who is making this progress possible.”
– Marie-Philippe Bouchard, President and CEO, CBC/Radio-Canada
“The National Indigenous Strategy’s first progress report highlights the significant strides we’ve made over the past year in our work toward a more inclusive and equitable public broadcaster — one that includes and accurately represents First Nations, Inuit and Métis. When I started with this organization 20 years ago, I never could have imagined the collective journey we would be on today. I’m excited for what’s still to come.”
— Robert Doane, Senior Director, Indigenous Office, CBC/Radio-Canada
Launched in February 2024, the National Indigenous Strategy is our collective commitment to examine our content and relationships with Indigenous Peoples, honestly and truthfully. To learn more about the progress we’ve made to date, read the full version of the report.
