Unicef has collaborated with the Association of Radio Operators of India to hold a first-of-its kind workshop on routine immunisation for radio professionals in Delhi.
Attended by 40 presenters and top executives from private FM radio stations, the event was part of the World Immunisation Week, reported Asia Radio Today. It focused on building awareness on RI and utilising radio to save children’s lives by highlighting the importance of vaccination. Caroline Den Dulk, Chief of Communication, Unicef India, said: “Radio has enabled us to reach key messages to audiences across the country.”
The country’s public radio broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) looks set to expand its digital shortwave reach further. Media specialist Sharad Sadhu told Radio Asia 2014 that AIR now has what is perhaps the largest shortwave Digital Radio Mondiale service in the world. Sadhu told the conference in Sri Lanka, organised by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, that an estimated 78 new transmitters will ensure around 70 per cent of the population will be able to receive DRM services, when implemented.
But he called for manufacturers to consider integrated digital radio chipsets, allowing FM, DAB+, DRM and other digital radio standards on the same radio set, reported Radio and Music.
Meanwhile, both AIR and Doordarshan (India’s TV Public Service Broadcaster) may be in line for a boost from the new Modi government, although it is not clear yet what this will entail; for example, additional funding or increased government influence?
The Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Prakash Javadekar, said the government would “re-energise” both government media channels and bring back their lost glory, it was reported in Business Line. On the issue of allowing news broadcast on private FM radio, Javadekar gave a cryptic response saying: “My heart is for news,” but did not elaborate further, the report continued.
