Established in 1973, BON is Nigeria’s umbrella union of public and private broadcasters from across the analogue and digital spectrums. It’s vision is to “future-proof” the radio and television environment to ensure that it serves its audience and contributes to the “development of society”. It has over 100 members, with 250 radio and television stations.

After a revered career as a broadcast journalist and CEO of the independent and award winning Channels TV (a PMA member), John Momoh is well positioned to take on this new role.

In his acceptance speech Momah described how BON has a long way to go in terms of addressing matters that directly affect its membership, and that he will encourage greater collaboration to “tackle [the] common challenges” that broadcasters face.

“The leadership I offer, which you have endorsed by your votes today, is determined to address these and influence a new thinking, a new respect and a new vision for us all as professional broadcasters”, he said.

He also spoke of giving hope to future generations of broadcasters: “Collectively, we shall begin a rapid development of the broadcast industry in Nigeria while embracing cutting edge technologies to match our counterparts around the globe”.

His first tasks, however, are to reenforce support of broadcasters in the digital age, advocate broadcasting issues to governments and regulators, inspire innovation so that broadcasters can develop new services, and continue training broadcast personnel.
