The Government of Canada Invests $14.6 Million to Create a French-Language Digital Platform: TV5MONDE Plus

The Government of Canada confirms a contribution of $14.6 million to boost the transition of TV5MONDE to digital and the international visibility of French-Canadian creators. Sylvain Lafrance has been appointed chair of the board of directors of TV5Numérique, the new subsidiary of TV5 Québec Canada responsible for supporting the development of this project.

With the proliferation of content on the Web, the Government of Canada is committed to protecting and promoting the place of the French language in the digital sphere, and to ensuring that Francophones and Francophiles around the world can access French-language content.

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Tourism, Official Languages and La Francophonie, confirmed an investment of $14.6 million over five years, starting in 2019–2020, to support the creation of a new digital platform to broadcast French-language audiovisual products: TV5MONDE Plus. The project is intended to drive the digital shift of TV5MONDE and promote the international reach of French-language Canadian productions.

Minister Joly also took the opportunity to highlight the appointment of Sylvain Lafrance as chair of the board of Directors of TV5Numérique, the new subsidiary of TV5 Québec Canada that will be responsible for the development of this platform. As a Canadian company, TV5 Québec Canada will work closely with TV5MONDE on the development of this multilateral project.

Last October, in preparation for the 17th Francophonie Summit in Yerevan, Armenia, the Government of Canada announced its intention to support the creation of a French-language digital platform that brings together TV5MONDE’s public broadcasters to showcase Francophone cultures and strengthen their position in the digital world.

The Canadian funding for the platform aims not only to increase the online presence of French-language content, but also to enhance the visibility of Canadian content in French and provide new international opportunities for Canadian artists and producers.

This funding confirms the Government of Canada’s commitment to fostering exchanges among members of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, while contributing to the vitality, diversity and evolution of the Francophone community.

Le gouvernement du Canada, fier partenaire de TV5, investit 14,6 millions de dollars pour la création d’une plateforme numérique francophone : TV5MONDE Plus

Le gouvernement du Canada confirme sa contribution de 14,6 millions de dollars pour propulser le virage numérique de TV5MONDE et soutenir le rayonnement des créateurs francophones canadiens à l’étranger. Sylvain Lafrance présidera le conseil d’administration de TV5 Numérique, la nouvelle filiale de TV5 Québec Canada, qui est responsable d’appuyer le développement de ce projet

Face à la multiplication des contenus sur le Web, le gouvernement du Canada s’est donné comme mission de protéger et de promouvoir la place de la langue française dans la sphère numérique et d’offrir aux francophones et aux francophiles du monde entier la possibilité d’accéder à du contenu en français.

L’honorable Mélanie Joly, ministre du Tourisme, des Langues officielles et de la Francophonie, a confirmé un investissement de 14,6 millions de dollars sur cinq ans dès 2019-2020 en vue d’appuyer la création d’une nouvelle plateforme numérique pour la diffusion de produits audiovisuels francophones : TV5MONDE Plus. Ce projet vise à propulser le virage numérique de TV5MONDE et à favoriser le rayonnement international des productions francophones canadiennes.

La ministre Joly a aussi profité de l’occasion pour souligner la nomination de M. Sylvain Lafrance à titre de président du conseil d’administration de TV5Numérique, la nouvelle filiale de TV5 Québec Canada, qui sera créée dans le but d’assurer le développement de cette plateforme. En tant qu’entreprise canadienne, TV5 Québec Canada travaillera en étroite collaboration avec TV5MONDE pour le développement de ce projet multilatéral.

En octobre dernier, en préparation du 17e Sommet de la Francophonie à Erevan, en Arménie, le gouvernement du Canada avait annoncé son intention d’appuyer la création d’une plateforme numérique francophone réunissant les diffuseurs publics de TV5MONDE afin de mettre en valeur les cultures francophones et de renforcer leur place dans le monde numérique.

Le financement canadien dédié à la plateforme vise non seulement à augmenter la présence en ligne du contenu en français, mais aussi à offrir une visibilité accrue au contenu canadien de langue française et à offrir de nouveaux débouchés aux artistes et producteurs canadiens sur la scène internationale.

Ce financement confirme ainsi la volonté du gouvernement du Canada de favoriser les échanges entre les membres de l’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, tout en contribuant au dynamisme de l’espace francophone, à sa diversité et à son évolution.
