Current projects
Keeping African Women Journalists Safe
Where?
West Africa (Ghana and Nigeria)
What?
This project evaluates safeguards, identifies gaps, and strengthens physical, online, and mental well-being measures for women journalists in Ghana and Nigeria. The project comprises several core activities, including research, training for women journalists and media managers, and an impact evaluation session. Notably, the capacity-building workshops will support women journalists as they develop “safety toolboxes” to manage risks, while media managers will receive training on developing and sustaining safety protocols.

Media Literacy Across Caribbean Generations
Where?
The Caribbean (Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago)
What?
Building on previous IPDC and PMA efforts in the region, this project aims to both increase and sustain media and information literacy (MIL) initiatives across the Caribbean by building capacities and much-needed collaboration among the media organisations, universities, and libraries. The project expands previous foci to include older generations and will will empower stakeholders to develop and implement community-driven and age-specific MIL initiatives, that lay the foundation for sustained regional collaboration to improve news, media, and digital literacy across generations.

Data Journalism for Caribbean Disaster Preparedness

Where?
Barbados, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago
What?
This project aimed to harness the power of data journalism to bolster disaster risk reduction (DRR) efforts in the Caribbean and addressed the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters by equipping journalists with the skills and tools needed to produce data-driven reporting that informs and empowers communities, through a series of dynamic activities, including a hackathon, virtual training, mentorship, and a project showcase.

Research Project: Responsible AI in International Public Media

What?
This research project, funded by the BRAID Fellowship and led by Dr Kate Wright (University of Edinburgh), sought to improve knowledge exchange and collaboration between international PSM on responsible AI, and resulted in extensive research and an industry report that helped shape broader industry and regulatory discussions. The project used PMA’s extensive network to research best practices in the deployment of AI in an ethical, value-driven way.

Building a Media Literate Generation

Where?
The Caribbean (in Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago)
What?
The project aimed to establish lasting media literacy in the Caribbean by nurturing critical skills among schoolchildren, educators, and journalists, fostering a culture of informed engagement and responsible news production and consumption. The project included several activities, including a capacity-building workshop for journalists and educators, and in-country activities geared at schoolchildren ages 9-15.

Workshop: Responsible AI & Public Media
Where?
Johannesburg, South Africa
What?
Hosted by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) at their Johannesburg HQ, this workshop for PMA members and other public broadcasters from across Southern Africa, was designed to mitigate some of the challenges posed by the rollout of AI tools. Led by Paul McNally, the workshop explored how AI can be best used in an ethical, responsible, and value-driven way across public media and public interest news organisations.

Gender Sensitive Reporting

Bangkok, Thailand

The project aimed to enable CSOs/NGOs and the media to work collaboratively together to produce more transparent, relevant, responsive, and accessible content on gender issues, especially addressing Violence against women and girls (VAWG).

Digital Investigative Journalism

Windhoek, Namibia
What?
This project was designed to ensure that broadcast journalists in Sub-Saharan Africa stay abreast of the latest technological-driven investigative techniques, including different approaches to accessing information.

Sustainability Symposium

London, the UK
What?
This one-day workshop will brought together public media researchers and workers to discuss sustainability, and provided an opportunity for a frank discussion and knowledge exchange on sustainability and PSM, reflecting on recent strategies in a rapidly changing media landscape.

The project’s final objective was to contribute towards improved media and information literacy in the Caribbean by laying the foundation for more careful reporting, fact-checking, transparency regarding media ownership, and increased regional collaboration.

Crisis Management for Journalists

The project’s final objective was to produce a code of conduct and crisis management plan to strengthen the Haitian media landscape in the areas of press freedom, safety of journalists and credible journalism during a pandemic, crisis, or disaster.

Conflict Reporting

The project’s purpose was to enable media professionals to examine and review their role in the reporting of conflict, particularly ethnic and religious violence, and to devise strategies for covering conflict accurately, impartially, and responsibly while ensuring their own safety.

Impact of Covid-19

The project sought to compile a regional roadmap that addressed challenges brought about during the Covid-19 crisis, and provide recommendations on how to better equip journalists, media organisations and the wider media environment in the region with useful and practical ways of responding to the challenges during and beyond the COVID-19 crisis.

Social Media Guidelines

The PMA project – aimed at journalists and media professionals from Southern Africa – was implemented as a workshop. The project sought to collaboratively establish guidelines to strengthen the role of social media and its positive uses within newsrooms and media organisations.
