2025 Global Grants
Back from the Field: 2025 Grantees
8 August 2025
With all 2025 Global and Trainer Grants now completed, read from the grantees as they reflect on their trips and experiences.

This year, with support from Grace Wyndham Goldie (BBC) Trust, PMA provided nine Global Grants and three Trainer Grants. The Global Grant and Trainer Grant schemes enabled interactions and exchanges between 26 public broadcasters from 24 countries, from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Oceania, and North America.
Global Grants
The Global Grants facilitated nine exchanges of up to £1,500, on a wide range of projects. The grantees came from a wide range of backgrounds including producers, reporters, editors, and managers from the Seychelles, Switzerland, Ghana, Thailand, Fiji, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Canada. Their projects tackled key issues for many public media organisations, such as investigative and ethical journalism, digital transformation, storytelling skills, studio management, reaching diverse audiences, Indigenous strategies, media-asset management, and content forming for specific audiences.

Trainer Grants
Increased funding for the Trainer Grant this year provided the flexibility to facilitate three training programmes including one larger regional project. The largest programme allowed us to host the much-needed Responsible AI for Pacific Media workshops, which saw staff from 11 public media organisations from across the Pacific attend virtual workshops, working group sessions, and a two-month-long AI clinic. The Trainer Grant also allowed PMA to deliver Radio Broadcasting Skills for Radio Cayman presenters, reporters and announcers, and to facilitate an Indigenous Archive Knowledge Exchange between the ABC and CBC/Radio-Canada.

The support from the Grace Wyndham Goldie [BBC] Trust Fund has been vital in enabling our work to champion public service media, especially amid growing global challenges. These exchanges and training opportunities have greatly benefited participating organisations—building partnerships, developing skills, and inspiring new content. The Public Media Alliance is deeply grateful for this support.
Applications for the 2026 Global Grants and Trainer Grants will be opened later this year.

His objectives were to understand SABC’s digital content distribution, community engagement efforts, and TV licensing systems. During his visit, Mark engaged with several departments, including TV-OB, Radio, IT, Contribution & Distribution (SENTECH), Engineering, Planning and Execution, Governance, Risk & Compliance, and Digital Media. He was impressed by SABC’s use of OTT platforms, multilingual broadcasting, and impactful CSR initiatives. SABC’s proposals to adopt a levy-based licensing model stood out. Location: Radio Television Malaysia (RTM)
Date: 20 – 22 May 2025

“In terms of professional development, I thoroughly enjoyed my tour. I feel inspired by RTM’s professionalism and dedication to work. I will try to incorporate ideas such as the use of a software and reporter appointment process in my project titled: Social Media Strategic Program Development. My interaction with officials of RTM was very cordial. I could connect with their subjects and mode of operations as the two countries share similarities in people’s choice and culture.”
Syeda’s project, titled ‘Social Media Strategic Program Development,’ aims to create a media policy with clear guidelines for content creation and dissemination across social media platforms. She visited Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) due to its effective integration of social media alongside traditional broadcasting. As Bangladesh Betar plans to develop their focus on social media, Syeda’s visit to RTM was intended to observe and learn from their best practices. Malaysia’s proximity to Bangladesh also made the visit more feasible.
The three-day visit proved highly informative. RTM officials were supportive, assigning a guide to assist Syeda throughout. She observed how RTM repurposes traditional content for digital platforms and uses content management software, which was new and insightful for her. Discussions with both senior and mid-level staff provided valuable understanding of their operations.
