9th April 2024
We are pleased to announce the awardees of this year’s Global Grants.
Global Grantees
The successful recipients of this year's Global Grants.

The Public Media Alliance Global Grantee Scheme – kindly funded by The Grace Wyndham Goldie (BBC) Trust – facilitates public media workers within the global membership of PMA, to embark on mutual learning visits, projects, participate in events, or undergo overseas training for a duration of up to two weeks.

Notably, this year marks an expansion of the programme, with PMA successfully securing funding for nine individual grants and a new Trainer Grant to facilitate on-the-ground training.

The overarching objective is to foster knowledge exchange, skill enhancement, and organisational growth among public media institutions while fostering international networking opportunities. More details about the new Trainer Grant will be announced soon.

Our sincere thanks to The Grace Wyndham Goldie (BBC) Trust Fund for supporting last year’s Global Grants.

Project: Minority audiences and languages

Reaction statement:

“I am so very grateful for this opportunity to learn more, develop our journalism and meet new colleagues with the help of Public Media Alliance Global Grant 2024. I work at Swedish Radio (SR) at a channel serving the Finnish minority in Sweden (Sveriges Radio Finska) and hope to travel to New Zealand to hear more about their new initiatives to produce content for and about the diverse Indian and Chinese minorities in New Zealand. I am excited to explore new ways to reach our minority communities with journalism that they want to consume and learn more about how RNZ works to serve minority communities. I am also interested in hearing how different newsrooms co-operate to reach their target groups better. I am, in other words, very much looking forward to exchanging ideas with public service colleagues who also report about, and for, a minority community.”

“I am very pleased, feel honoured and excited to have been selected by the Public Media Alliance as a recipient of the 2024 Global Grant. Khalia Strong

Job title: Senior Multimedia Journalist
Organisation: Pacific Media Network, New Zealand
Travelling to: PBS Hawai’i

Project: Cultural collaborations

Reaction statement:

“I’m incredibly proud and grateful for this opportunity – to represent my Tongan heritage and Pacific Media Network (PMN) to a larger network, thanks to the Public Media Alliance. Our outreach includes two radio stations and an online news site, with weekly programmes broadcast in ten Pacific languages. My project involves travel to PBS in Hawai’i to meet and build relationships with another Pacific-focussed broadcast organisation, fostering opportunities for dialogue, the exchanging of ideas and cultural practices and creating pathways for future collaboration.

I am timing the visit to align with the Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC), which is a celebration of Pacific arts and traditions, with delegations coming from all over the world. Auckland has one of the most concentrated Pacific population clusters, and is sometimes called the Polynesian capital of the world. Connecting with other PMA-connected organisations will bring additional depth to our journalism, along with opportunities to learn from each other. On return, I look forward to sharing the experiences with our newsroom and other Pacific broadcasters, implementing my learning to our day-to-day news coverage and future projects.
