Roundtable: Responsible AI in International Public Media
WHEN: 29 JANUARY 2026
Our next PSM Unpacked roundtable will explore Responsible AI in International Public Media: Procurement, Geopolitics and Governance.

Staff at PMA member organisations, and members of the International Association of Public Media Researchers are invited to register for our forthcoming roundtable on Responsible AI in International Public Media. Details on the event, what will be covered, and how to signup, are all below.
Why
Trustworthy news underpins democracy and counters mis- and disinformation. High-quality international reporting also supports cross-cultural understanding and an awareness of shared global risks. In an era of rising authoritarianism, pandemics, conflict and climate change, its value is greater than ever.
AI could help news organisations become more sustainable by lowering the high-costs of producing multimedia, multiplatform, and multilingual international coverage. But what does the responsible use of AI look like in global news production?
The second industry report from the Public Media Alliance’s Responsible AI in International Public Media project, looked at how public service media organisations procure and use AI tools off the market to support their journalism.
PSM and AI Part 2: Governance, Geopolitics, and Procurement was authored by Kate Wright, Chair in Media and Communications at The University of Edinburgh, and Kristian Porter, PMA CEO. Part 1 of the report mapped what AI tools are used by public media organisations in journalism production and how they are used.
Who is it for
This roundtable is designed for PMA members and guests working with, or interested in the responsible use, procurement, and governance of AI tools for public service media. Whether your organisation has pre-established strategies or is seeking to develop their own in this area, your participation and insights will be invaluable. The event will also be open to IAPMR members – academics working in the field of public service media.
What will be covered?
- Responsible use and procurement of AI tools
- Unique duties of PSM tied to democracy and law
- Security vs. independence
- Over-reliance on AI companies and related risks
- Limits of AI sovereignty
This roundtable will be led by the project’s lead author, Prof Kate Wright, and held in partnership between the Public Media Alliance (PMA) and the International Association of Public Media Researchers (IAPMR).
Participants will have the opportunity to ask Prof Kate Wright questions, share their experiences, and discuss challenges with other attendees. We will be able to extend the event to facilitate further discussions for those who require it.
Both reports are available to download at the bottom of this post.

PSM & AI
Part 1: Mapping how public service media use AI in journalism
July 2025
What AI tools do public service media around the world use in journalism production? How do they use them? And where do these news organisations find alignment in deciding on their use?
The report maps current use of AI in journalism production at public media organisations: exploring which AI tools PSM use, how they use them, and how senior managers frame and justify their use in relation to PSM values.
PSM & AI
Part 2: Governance, Geopolitics, and Procurement
November 2025
The second report examines the challenges faced by PSM in trying to procure AI ‘responsibly’, and how the procurement and use of AI is embedded in governance structures.
13 public media organisations of varying incomes from five continents were included in the interviews and data collection, which took place throughout 2024 and 2025.
