PROJECT
Join PMA and UNESCO in shaping the future of Caribbean media literacy
1st October 2024
The “Building the Caribbean’s Next Generation of Media Literate Citizens” project will culminate on December 10 with a regional consultation for media and education stakeholders.
In collaboration with the UNESCO Caribbean Office and regional partners, the Public Media Alliance (PMA) will host a virtual roundtable for Caribbean media and education professionals on Tuesday 10 December 2024. Participants at the event, “The Caribbean Media Literacy Roundtable: Opportunities for Collaboration and Future Initiatives”, will discuss collaboration opportunities and initiatives to enhance media literacy throughout the Caribbean.
“This online event is special since it not only targets the project countries of Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago, but it will also open the conversation to the wider Caribbean region,” explained Desilon Daniels, PMA’s Project & Advocacy Coordinator. “This is an opportunity to consider not only how we can better such media literacy initiatives in the future, but also how we can expand this specific project’s reach across the Caribbean.”
Over the course of two hours, the consultation will include key findings from the ongoing media literacy project, as well as breakout group discussions with the 30 key stakeholders, including teachers, education ministry representatives, media professionals, and policymakers. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies for enhancing media literacy in their respective fields. There will also be opportunities for participants to contribute and shape future regional initiatives aimed at fostering greater media and information literacy (MIL) capacity and skills across multiple industries.

Are you interested in participating in this forum? Please kindly register your attendance by Friday 6 December 2024 to receive an invitation. For any event queries, please contact info@publicmediaalliance.org.
The regional consultation forms part of a wider project aimed at empowering schoolchildren, educators, and journalists. At the heart of this project is the recognition that building the media and information literacy skills of citizens – particularly their news literacy and digital literacy skills – requires a multisectoral approach.
