MEMBERS’ EXCLUSIVE

Join us on 8 October 2025 for our next PSM Unpacked roundtable, where we explore how public media support and promote Indigenous, minority, and lesser-used languages.

REGISTRATION: RSVP to editor@publicmediaalliance.org by Monday 6 October

EVENT: Wednesday 8 October

Many public broadcasters serve multicultural and multilingual societies. Supporting Indigenous, minority, and lesser-used languages through their output is an essential role, ensuring audiences can access content that informs, educates, and entertains, in their own language. It also fulfils public media’s role in contributing to the shaping of a country’s cultural and national identity. But there are a great many challenges facing public media in this space, not least the number of Indigenous, minority and lesser-used languages that are under threat of extinction; or the financial resources it takes to produce this content, particularly when it is for small audiences.

This session is designed for staff at PMA member organisations whose role involves supporting Indigenous, minority and lesser-used languages, as well as those interested in strengthening their organisation’s role in fostering the use of these languages in their organisation. Whether your organisation has pre-established strategies or is seeking to develop their own in this area, your participation and insights will be invaluable.

The roundtable will explore:

  • What role public media play in helping to support and promote a Indigenous, minority and lesser-used;
  • How are public broadcasters currently engaging with minority and Indigenous language communities?
  • Through what programmes, projects, initiatives and content, are public media currently supporting this cultural mission;
  • What platforms and formats are most effective to reach these communities?
  • What capacity there is for public media to collaborate to serve audiences;
  • Whether AI can be an assistive tool for public media in delivering upon their mission;
  • How the impact of public media on a language and its speakers can be measured.

Participants will have the opportunity to share experiences, discuss challenges, and learn from case studies highlighting successful initiatives.

Speakers will be announced soon, so keep an eye on our website, social media pages, and our newsletter, PMA Update.
