As of Friday evening, 80 people have died and 34 remain missing. The severity of the cyclone has triggered flash floods, landslides, and severe disruption to the country’s core infrastructure.

Sri Lanka’s Essential Services Act has also been enacted, designating  a wide range of services, including media and telecommunications, as being “essential to the life of the community”.

At times of crisis, trusted public media are informational lifelines. We have been asked to call on fellow members and other news providers to provide much needed coverage of the unfolding situation and support where they can. The situation is fast moving – more details on relief efforts and support will be provided in due course.
